The Iranian security service apprehended 40 terrorist suspects in an counter-terrorism operation carried out in eastern Iran over a 48-hour period, during which a secret tunnel used by criminals was discovered, the country's interior minister, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — In June, the Iranian authorities dismantled a terrorist cell in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan.

"Two nights ago, we discovered a 40-meter [some 131 feet] tunnel at a depth of 20 meters [some 66 feet] below the earth's surface in the eastern part of the country and they [the terrorists] intended to use it… to conduct explosions and other operations…. 40 people were arrested in connection with this," Fazil was cited by FARS agency as saying.
