TEHRAN, March 5 - The Iranian military hit a US tanker in the Persian Gulf, the vessel is on fire, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Thursday.

"The tanker was hit this morning in the northern part of the Persian Gulf by the IRGC naval forces and now [the vessel] is on fire," the IRGC said in a statement.

Additionally, the IRGC said that the Strait of Hormuz is under control of Iran, and vessels of the US, Israel and European countries will not pass through it.

On Wednesday, Reuters reported, citing US officials, that at least 78 people were injured, 101 were missing after an Iranian ship was attacked by a submarine off the coast of Sri Lanka. Later, the news agency reported that the attack was carried out by the US armed forces.
